Galvanic corrosion is corrosion created between two metals that come in contact with each other with a corrosive electrical contact medium such as saltwater. I have attached a link with more information provided by the NACE International corrosion society. There must be an electrically conductive path between these metals to allow this to happen. The plating of zinc on steel intentionally uses this corrossion to protect the steel product. The zinc will corrode rather that the steel. The zinc corrosion is identified by seeing white powder form on the zinc plated surface this is zinc oxide.
